The Member States and the European Commission have considered the novel food status of cannabidiol under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 and they concluded that cannabidiol (CBD) is a novel food (relevant information can be found in the Commission’s Novel Food Status Catalogue under the entries cannabidiol and cannabinoids). Before its placing on the EU market, CBD must be authorized in accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned Regulation.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a statement, in 2022, that the safe use of CBD as a novel food cannot currently be established:
